I. Maintenance Objectives and General Principles
The core of maintaining large-span warehouse racking is to ensure structural safety, maintain load-bearing capacity, and extend service life. This requires an organic combination of daily inspections, periodic maintenance, standardized personnel management, and institutionalized procedures. Industry practice shows that warehouse racking, under standardized maintenance and correct use, can have a service life of over 15 years. Simultaneously, a load limit signage and usage system covering the entire warehouse should be established, and forklifts and other handling equipment should be operated by certified personnel to reduce the risk of collisions and overloading.
II. Daily Inspections and Periodic Maintenance
• It is recommended to use a "monthly inspection + annual assessment" baseline: Monthly inspections should focus on whether uprights, beams, and shelves are deformed or damaged; whether bolts/nuts/safety pins are loose or missing; and whether welds show cracks. Annually, a professional should be hired to conduct a safety assessment of heavy-duty and high-bay racking, and structural verification and reinforcement should be carried out if necessary.
• Perform cleaning, rust removal, and rust prevention maintenance on metal components in a closed-loop environment; maintain ventilation and dehumidification in the storage area to prevent long-term dampness that can lead to corrosion and reduced load-bearing capacity; areas near windows/awnings should be inspected thoroughly, and wooden shelves must be protected from rain and mold.
• Keep passageways and work areas clean and free of debris to prevent secondary accidents caused by tripping or accidental collisions.

III. Load-Bearing and Operation Management
• Strictly adhere to the principles of "no overloading, no exceeding height limits, no exceeding width limits" and "heavier at the bottom, lighter on top": the load-bearing capacity of each layer must not exceed the design value, and the weight of the goods should include additional loads such as pallets/packaging; it is recommended to leave a safety distance of no less than 100 mm between the goods and the edges of the shelves to avoid the risk of them protruding or falling.
• Storage and retrieval operations should be carried out with even load distribution to avoid eccentricity; it is strictly forbidden to concentrate loads on a single pallet/side, causing excessive deflection in the middle span; if abnormal noises, obvious deformation, or loose connections are found, work must be stopped immediately and the area isolated until professional personnel assess the situation before resuming operations.
• The passageway for handling equipment should be compatible with the aisle width, turning radius, and lifting height of the racking system; crash barriers/corner guards should be installed at corners and uprights to reduce upright deformation and structural instability caused by forklift collisions.
IV. Environmental Protection and Safety Facilities
• Metal racking systems should prioritize moisture, sun, and rain protection: maintain ventilation/dehumidification inside the warehouse; promptly dry damp areas and reapply anti-rust paint after rain; racking systems and wooden components near exterior walls or window openings require special protection.
• Enhance safety protection: install crash barriers/guardrails in high-traffic areas for forklifts; safety nets/fall protection measures can be added to high-level racking systems; fire extinguishers should be provided according to regulations and inspected regularly; flammable materials are strictly prohibited from being stored in the warehouse area; ensure unobstructed fire exits.
• Regularly inspect wooden shelves for defects such as dampness, insect infestation, and warping, and replace them when necessary; promptly repair any damaged surface coatings to maintain protective performance.
V. Record Keeping and Systematized Management
• Establish shelving ledgers and inspection records, ensuring traceability of the time, location, problem description, handling measures, and responsible person for each inspection; visually display load limit signs and operating procedures, and regularly disseminate them.
• Implement tiered training: Forklift and stacker operators must be certified to operate, emphasizing key points such as impact prevention, off-center load identification, and abnormality reporting; incorporate shelving maintenance into daily KPIs and safety performance assessments to form a closed-loop management system.
